The Wines of Washington State

In 1970 Washington had just half a dozen commercial wineries; today it has over 750 with 13 different AVAs. The wines are widely recognized for producing flavorful, superbly structured wines from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and other varieties, but the single most planted variety is Riesling, We travel to Washington State in late June to taste wines, talk with winemakers, and tour the famous vineyards of the state. Look for our report later this year.

The Sweet Wines of South Africa (Updated)

We reported our highly positive evaluations of South Africa's delicious and varied sweet wines in our Report #27: Sweet Wines of the World. During our recent trip to South Africa we had the opportunity to try some new sweet wines and try newer vintages of wines we had already tasted in the US. This updated report reconfirms our earlier findings—South Africa is producing some of the best sweet wines in the the world.
