Report #38
The Wines of Washington State

In 1970 Washington had just half a dozen commercial wineries; today it has over 750 with 13 different AVAs. The wines are widely recognized for producing flavorful, superbly structured wines from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and other varieties, but the single most planted variety is Riesling, We travel to Washington State in late June to taste wines, talk with winemakers, and tour the famous vineyards of the state. Look for our report later this year.

Wine Tasting Coordinator:  Roy Wagner
Roy has been an avid wine taster for thirty-five years. He lived in California during the seventies and experienced it's rise to international prominence. Now living in Virginia he sees it truly emerging as the "Napa of the East Coast". He has tasted wines from all over the world, but still prefers those from the United States.

He has been keeping "score" of the wines he has encountered for most of that time and created many of his own rating systems.  He is a firm believer that the "blind tasting" keeps the ratings and reviews  true to their inherent qualities.

He co-ordinates many of the i-WineReview tastings and also maintains the database that is used to search for wine reviews at the web site.
